AGU Science Policy Alert 14-2

The White House Office of Management and Budget has extended the public comment period for its Technical Support Document (TSD) “Update of the Social Cost of Carbon for Regulatory Impact Analysis under Executive Order No. 12866

The document serves as an important tool in assessing the total cost of carbon in the regulatory efforts conducted by federal agencies. It is not itself a regulation, but its adoption lays the groundwork for regulatory measures that take into account the full costs and impacts associated with climate change. The proposed TSD updates some of the predictions in the models it uses and indicates that the costs associated with climate change are larger than previously thought.

More background information on the social cost of carbon can be found on the Environmental Protection Agency’s website.

Whether you are a scientist or concerned citizen, your input on the changes to the TSD are critically important. Commenting on the document will help show agencies that there is public support behind the science of climate change, as well as their efforts in tackling the problem.

The comment period closes 27 February 2014, so submit your comments today!

While your comments will remain anonymous, they will be made publicly available. Please refrain from using any information that is of a sensitive or confidential nature.
