AGU Science Policy Alert 15-6
A new bill released by the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee would decrease funding for the National Science Foundation’s Geoscience Directorate (GEO) by 8 percent below current levels. The bill, the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2015 (H.R. 1806), critically underfunds GEO, as well as vital energy programs at the Department of Energy.
Cuts like these are damaging because Earth and space science research helps to protect American lives and infrastructure from tornadoes, hurricanes, and other natural hazards; helps to sustain biological diversity and ocean resources; conserves soil and water for agricultural productivity; and helps to find and maintain adequate supplies of mineral and energy resources.
Help support Earth and space science funding by writing an email asking your representative to oppose H.R. 1806. The AGU Policy Action Center lets you write to your representative directly and provides talking points to help you convey the importance of funding Earth and space sciences research.
