Geosciences Congressional Visits Day

Event Details

Come to D. C. and Share Your Science with Policy Makers

AGU, in collaboration with other geoscience societies, invites geoscientists to come to Washington, D. C., for the annual Geosciences Congressional Visits Day (Geo-CVD) on 12-13 September 2017. Decision makers need to hear from geoscientists to know the value of Earth and space science for their districts and states. Join your colleagues for this 2-day event uniting geoscience researchers, professionals, students, educators, engineers, and executives in Washington, D. C., to raise visibility and support for the geosciences.

The goal of Geo-CVD is to help build relationships between Earth and space scientists and policy makers. Over time, these relationships grow, and you can become a “go-to” expert when a congressional office needs critical geoscience information.

If you have never visited a congressional office, take this first important step today, and AGU staff will help you along the way. If you already have a strong relationship with your legislators or you are working towards that goal, this is a great chance to continue to build that relationship with AGU’s help.

Participants will spend the afternoon of Tuesday 12 September at a workshop honing their communication skills. Participants will learn how Congress works, how to conduct congressional visits, and about relevant legislation, federal agencies, and programs. At the end of the workshop, participants will be given time to craft and practice their messages in small teams with geoscience policy staff.

Wednesday 13 September will consist of visits with members of Congress or their congressional staff on Capitol Hill.

If you are interested, please apply, and AGU staff will contact you.
