AGU Science Policy Alert 12-19

Are you interested in developing your leadership skills and serious about putting your science to work for public benefit? Then register now for the AMS Summer Policy Colloquium in Washington, DC, being held from 3-12 June 2012! The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has run this unique and highly successful science policy immersion workshop for over a decade, and for the second year, AGU is proud to be partnering with AMS to provide communication training to participating scientists.

Each year, 30-40 Earth and atmospheric scientists from academia, government, and the private sector meet for ten days with federal officials, congressional staff, and others engaged in the policy process. Participants also attend hands-on workshops and engage dozens of scientist-leaders in formal and casual conversations throughout the Colloquium. Participants come away with a deeper appreciation for the policy process and are equipped with tools for being effective in the policy arena. They also build a network of contacts and resources that will help them going forward in science policy. More information, including participant biographies and agendas from previous years, is available on theĀ Colloquium web site.

Nearly 350 people have attended the Colloquium over its first ten years. Colloquium alumni are now working on Capitol Hill and in university leadership positions, nongovernmental organizations, and high-level government and corporate positions. Chances are that you know one or more alums!

The deadline to register is now Tuesday, 1 May. Participation is limited to 50 individuals. For more information, contact Ann Cairns ( or Caitlin Buzzas (
